La parola “libertà” legata al vino e al gioiello mi ha fatto subito pensare ad un’onda, ad una voluta come quella che si forma nel calice quando il vino viene versato.
Altro elemento che associo al vino e al gioiello è la luce, così ho inserito all’interno una fonte luminosa anch’essa, per me, sinonimo di libertà. La luce che ho usato è però incanalata e guidata all’interno del gioiello, per uscirne fuori attraverso tanti piccoli fili di lenza, altrimenti, la luce sarebbe accecante. Da qui la necessità del vincolo, rappresentato dalla struttura in bronzo. Il bronzo con il suo colore caldo e rosato mi è sembrato il materiale ideale per fare un gioiello legato al vino.

The word “freedom”, associated with wine and jewelry, immediately made me think of a wave and of a spiral, just as when wine is poured into a glass.

I also associate light with wine and jewelry and so I put a bright source of light inside, synonymous itself of freedom. The light I used however is directed and guided within the jewelry piece so it can get through many small strands of fishing line. The light can otherwise be blinding, hence the need for a constraint, represented by the bronze structure.
Bronze with its warm and rose-tinted color seemed the ideal material to make a jewelry piece related to wine.

Stenia Scarselli vive e lavora a Pisa

Sono cresciuta a Volterra in una famiglia di artigiani alabastrai, da mio padre scultore ho ereditato la naturale propensione al lavoro manuale.
Le prime sperimentazioni le ho fatte da autodidatta nei primi anni ’80, in cui c’erano già, in fase embrionale, alcune tematiche che riprenderò poi negli anni ’90, dopo aver acquisito una fondamentale base tecnica sia nella scuola che nei laboratori. Dal 1998, data in cui ho aperto il mio primo laboratorio, ho sviluppato e approfondito alcuni filoni tematici come quello dei Totem, dei Tagli, degli Interni Vuoti, delle Strutture.
I metalli che utilizzo sono argento e oro accostati a legno, in prevalenza ebano, perle e qualche diamante. Il colore non è molto presente nei miei gioielli, fatta eccezione per alcuni elementi in smalto, mentre mi interessano molto i contrasti sia di superficie che di materiali poveri accostati a quelli preziosi.
Raramente disegno i miei gioielli, a volte faccio rapidamente dei modellini in carta, quasi sempre un’idea prende forma nella mente e di getto la realizzo in metallo; sono forme tridimensionali e architettoniche che alle volte vorrei ingrandire, come se il mio retaggio scultoreo spingesse per uscire.
Nel 2004 ho fatto il mio primo tentativo con la realizzazione di una scultura Totem in acciaio inox collocata a Livorno e nel 2011 ho sperimentato la trasposizione da gioiello a scultura luminosa in ferro nero e led.

I grew up in Volterra among a family of alabaster craftsmen. My father is a sculptor and from a very early age he encouraged me to work with my hands. In the early 1980s I started experimenting with jewellery creation and the themes of totems, structures, cuts and empty spaces started to emerge and become part of my creative dimension. I am still exploring and developing these themes today.
I use silver and gold alongside pearls, diamonds and wood, in particular ebony. Colour does not appear much in my jewellery except for some pieces that have enamel finishes. Contrasts interest me, placing humble materials alongside more precious ones.
In 2004 I had my first attempt as a sculptor: “Totem” a stainless steel structure is displayed in Livorno, a town near Pisa. In 2011 I experimented with the transferral of jewellery into luminous sculpture in black iron and LEDs.
I rarely design my jewellery beforehand. I might quickly make a paper model but usually an idea takes shape in my mind and I then transfer it instantly into its metal form. My creations have the trademark of architectonic shapes that I often want to make bigger as if my sculptural history is trying to free itself.
The source of my inspiration for new shapes is ever more varied. Everything around me is a stimulus for my work but nothing in particular is reproduced. The idea to create something is already within me, in my subconscious. It’s just a matter of when the idea decides to take shape. This can happen at any time.
